Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., the first Latino fraternity in the U.S., will be honored with a proclamation for nearly 50 years of achievements during the Hispanic Heritage Festival. The celebration will take place on Sept. 21 from noon-4 p.m. at Highland Park Commons, 2000 Union Ave.
Officials said, “Founded on Dec. 1, 1975, at Kean College in Union, NJ, Lambda Theta Phi has led the Latino Greek movement. In 2024, the fraternity made history at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTC) as the first and only Latin fraternity in Chattanooga.
“The proclamation recognizes Lambda Theta Phi’s dedication to serving, uplifting and advancing the Latino community through leadership, academic excellence and cultural diversity.
The Founding Brothers of the UTC Associate Chapter exemplify these values.”
The annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, presented in partnership with the city’s Equity & Community Engagement department, La Paz Chattanooga, Highland Park Commons and The Bethlehem Center, will feature Latino entertainment, food and craft vendors.
“It’s been in the making for a couple of years, and I’m happy to see that we are finally here doing the work I envisioned. It is a beautiful thing and worth celebrating. I think of those who came before us, and to be part of a legacy is truly inspiring. I encourage those witnessing this firsthand to join us,” said Mateo Jimenez, founding brother.
