Belmont Greek life raised more than $15,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the annual Greek Sing event Sunday night.
The night was emceed by Student Affairs’ Joe Mankowski, who oversees Greek Sing, and Hannah Hawkins, the vice president of programming on the Panhellenic Council.
The evening started off with the “Alpha Gam Halftime Show” performed by the members of Alpha Gamma Delta. The group wore red football jerseys and parodied past Super Bowl halftime shows. The highlights of the set included Katy Perry’s dancing sharks and a Backstreet Boys parody, “Phi Tau Guys.”
Kappa Alpha Theta performed next with “Mission Theta,” in which sorority members went on a search for clues left by Theta founder Bettie Locke. Their parodies of “Roar” by Katy Perry and “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson stood out with strong vocals. The videos that accompanied the performance had the audience laughing from start to finish.
The members of Phi Mu mastered synchronization in “G.I. PHI: Operation Reputation.” Their tight formations were eye catching and well executed. The group’s matching camouflage jackets made the choreography really pop, as they army crawled through parodies of Bruno Mars, Usher and Gwen Stefani.
The evening featured a special guest performance from the 629 Dance Team, which performed a high-energy routine that included some of the most complicated choreography of the event.
Just before intermission, Belmont and Theta alumna Mare Rote — who now works for St. Jude — introduced the Miller family. Anna Miller teared up as she told the audience about how St. Jude saved her son’s life.
“This child has been brave and strong, and he has rocked his chemo,” she said.
At intermission, $12,000 had been raised through ticket sales for Greek Sing, but they encouraged audience members to continue giving during intermission.
After a short break, Alpha Sigma Tau took the floor and advocated for female empowerment with “Tau Pwr.” The performance featured inspiring videos of AST and other Greek organization members. The most memorable part of the group’s act was a parody of “Born this Way” by Lady Gaga, in which members danced in white shirts with inspirational messages on them.
Next was Phi Tau’s “Phright Phest.” The members entered to a parody of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, wearing spooky white masks and black hoodies. The members gave a goofy performance where they whipped and flossed in pajama pants. The group’s videos tied the performance together and featured some of the funniest moments of the night, like a joke about “alumni purgatory.”
The evening also included performances from Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, Belmont’s two National Panhellenic Council sororities.
