Hofstra’s Tau Epsilon Phi Wins National Award

February 14, 2025

Hofstra University’s Sigma Alpha Sigma chapter of Tau Epsilon Phi has been honored with the Louis S. Lebenthal “Most Improved Chapter” Award, a prestigious national recognition celebrating the chapter’s remarkable growth and dedication. This award highlights their outstanding progress in key areas such as philanthropy, community service, and recruitment.

The award was presented at Grand Chapter in Hamilton, Bermuda, on October 9th, 2024. Hosted by The Grand Council of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity, Inc., this biannual gathering brings together fraternity representatives from across the country to network, exchange best practices, and vote on the new Grand Council.

Representing Hofstra at the event were Anthony “Hermes” D’Orio, a junior film studies and production major and this year’s chancellor, from Blauvelt, NY, and Christopher “6” Barker, a junior electrical engineering major from Rockville Centre, NY, and the fraternity’s bursar. Barker, a returning attendee, selected D’Orio to accompany him on this milestone occasion.

“Every year we have a representative from our national organization come in and they do an accreditation for our chapter,” explained Barker. So based on the criteria, there are a certain number of points that total up to the award for that category.”

“Our office is really excited for Tau Epsilon Phi as they have made significant strides in improving the operations of their organization,” said Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life Kelsey Wohlford. “Hofstra Greek Life is in a new era of rebuilding and strengthening operations, and on the brink of a cultural shift, where we can potentially see the community thriving like it once was pre-pandemic.”

Beyond the honor of receiving this award, the experience at Grand Chapter provided valuable insights to benefit future Hofstra Tau Epsilon Phi members.

“I got to network and learn how other chapters operate,” added D’Orio. “We even got some new tips and recommendations that we can teach to our members here at Hofstra, which was very helpful.”
