The 19th Ward Community Association (19WCA), with the help of University of Rochester Fraternity members, will be hosting its fifteenth annual 19th Ward Spelling Bee on April 5.
Since January, the fraternity has conducted in-person practices with interested public school students on Saturday mornings at the Arnett Library.
Peter Kochek is a sophomore data science and business analytics major at the University of Rochester and the Vice President of Programming for Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
Because of his role in his fraternity, he works very closely with the 19WCA on the spelling bee and has attended all of the weekly practices.
Kochek said that his fraternity has been helping with the Bee for over a decade.
“[Participating in the Bee] helps dispel the notion that frat brothers are on their own, having fun or whatever, but there’s also things that we do well in the community,” he said. “It feels good to help people. I think being able to do that and have a tangible impact on the larger Rochester area is very good.”
