UCF fraternity Theta Chi blew last year’s philanthropy event out of the water by raising $28,072 for United States troops – more than double the funds from the previous year.

G.I. Theta Chi Field Day made a return from COVID-19 on April 9 to raise funds for the United Service Organizations, a nonprofit providing support and facilities to military families, according to the USO website. The field day ended off Theta Chi’s month of philanthropy.

With some brothers, such as junior finance major Richard “Ricardo” Fleurisma III, having ties to the military through the National Guard, the event’s impact reached within the organization.

“It shows that people care,” Fleurisma said. “It’s one unison movement to support the USO because the USO is a great organization that helps active-duty military.”

Another Theta Chi brother, sophomore communications major Cameron Pausche, worked the popular “pie a Chi” booth at the event. Pausche said he was proud to participate in the fundraiser, especially due to its impact on his active-duty brothers.

“Honestly, it’s an honor because we are supporting the United States troops,” Pausche said. “It means a lot because we have brothers who are active-duty military and past brothers who are active-duty military.”
