Southeast Missouri State University students will spend Greek Week 2023 engaged in competition, fun, and giving back. The annual tradition will take place April 16-23.
As part of this year’s Disney + edition of Greek Week, sororities and fraternities worked together to create t-shirts, skits, and events with Disney themes to compete amongst one another. The pairs are awarded points based on their performance with the Greek team with the most points winning trophies. But more than points and trophies, Greek Week is about creating a lasting impression.
“One chapter alone has the potential to make an impact,” said Joey Curvey, director of this year’s Greek Week. “But a community, brought together by common ideals, has the potential to move mountains.”
Greek students began moving those mountains when they hosted a Blood Drive that took place in the weeks leading up to the official Greek Week. This year’s blood drive saw 667 units of blood collected, enough to potentially save over 2,000 people. This exemplifies the main theme of Greek Week: giving back.
“While there are a series of games and competitions going on, the premise of Greek Week is to donate and give back to the community that has done so much for us,” said Nicholas Feltz, graduate assistant in the Office of Greek Life.
Greek students also host Walk-A-Mile, an event that asks participants to walk a mile in high-heels to raise awareness for sexual assault. There will also be a canned food drive that benefits the Redhawk Food Pantry and a clothing drive to support the Women’s Safehouse of Southeast Missouri and Teen Challenge.
