PEORIA (25News Now) – Young men in Peoria were able to hear from the men of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity about how to navigate some of the problems they’re facing as teenage boys.
Peoria County ranks among the highest in the state for teen birth rates and sexually transmitted infections, and low-income populations and Black Americans are traditionally the most affected.
The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has teamed up with several local organizations to provide education, service, and skill-building workshops to young men on responsibility, relationships with women, and more.
Saturday’s conversations took place inside the Peoria High School library.
Chapter President Reginald Birris says by creating a safe space for the boys, they are able to have real and honest conversations.
”We want to do our part to make sure that we are providing positive influence to these young men so they can grow up and have a healthy environment to live in a be productive members of society,” Birris said.
The men also had people from the Hult center stop by to teach the boys about their reproductive system and safe practices.
