The Alpha Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc will be hosting a free event for all West Alabama fathers.

Saturday September 30th, there will be child passenger safety and safe sleep training for father in the West Alabama area starting at 10a at 3100 15th Street Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401.

“We want to help educate other men who are aspiring fathers, current fathers, soon to be fathers, uncles, and grandparents,” said Dominic Combs, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

“Our biggest thing is trying to be a platform for men who are interested in learning safety skills when it comes to children.”

Participants will learn proper techniques for installing and harnessing car seats, and proper safe sleeping techniques for infants.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 404 babies died before their first birthday. Of those deaths, 61 were officially ruled sleep-related with the cause of death listed as either “sudden infant death syndrome” (SIDS) or “accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed.” An additional 41 deaths were listed as “undetermined,” although many of those deaths occurred while the baby was sleeping.

Sadly, many children are injured or die in vehicles through accidents and it could be prevented.

The ADPH says that the majority of injuries to children are the result of being thrown into a windshield or dashboard, crushed by an adult, or thrown from the vehicle. In the event of a crash, an unrestrained child becomes like a missile that is thrown with great force.

All men in West Alabama are encouraged to attend this free training on September 30th.
