Fraternity spreads knowledge about youth health

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Spreading wellness for the mind, body, and spirit of youth in the Mid-South.

That’s what members of a Black Greek fraternity spent the weekend doing on a farm in Frayser.

The Healthy Kids Clinic today also spent time demonstrating how to have safe fun outdoors.

Youth are celebrating the talents of others and learning the importance of positive images for healthy wellbeing.

Members of the Sigma Lambda chapter of Omega Psi Phi wanted to not only teach these young people the importance of a healthy lifestyle but also show them.

Jeremiah Watson, a member of the fraternity, says this Healthy Kids Clinic included wellness and dental checks and financial literacy.

“And so we want to teach kids how to be healthy. When I was young, we stayed outside all the time until the lights came on. And so now kids are inside playing video games all the time. So I’m trying to teach them that you have to go out and be active and be healthy in everything that you do,” Watson said.

Mental and behavioral specialists also participated to show the youth how to handle negative energy and channel it into something positive.

“Well, it’s important once it catches kids minds and gets them involved, and one guy to make sure that they’re engaged. And so we were doing a lot of things to help give them engaging,” Watson said.

Watson says more partnerships between social and civic organizations to put on clinics like this will help today’s dependent kids become better independent adults.

“Girls Inc., they have been gracious enough to let us have this here, and they’ve been a great partner in this; the programs that they have here are exceptional teaching kids about culture, which, you know, I’m from Memphis and I’ve lived in urban areas all my life,” Watson said.
