Fifty years after welcoming the first fraternity on campus, the historically Black National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) has continued solidifying its strength and legacy at UNC Charlotte with the [addition] of 10 NPHC plaques in the Star Quad.
The chosen location for these honorary plaques is significant to the NPHC, as they were the group that gave the Star Quad its name.
The plaques came to life through the collaborative efforts of the University Foundation and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Kevin Bailey. Their goal was to celebrate the NPHC organization and its significance on campus.
Bailey worked with the Student Affairs marketing staff to design the plaques. The decision to keep them aligned with the Charlotte aesthetic of bronze was to keep them connected with the rest of campus.
The NPHC plaques were unveiled on Nov. 16, Homecoming day, prior to Charlotte’s home football game. Students and Charlotte NPHC alums were present to celebrate.
During the ceremony, Charlotte alums from various NPHC chapters participated in ribbon-cutting at the event. Each alum was given a personalized pair of scissors, which they used to cut the ribbon before passing down to a current student from their chapter.
