ORONO — When a member of UMaine’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity found out a fellow brother was struck by a tragedy they rallied together to support him.

A few months ago, UMaine student Grady Gobeil was diagnosed with stage 3A metastatic cancer, putting his college career on pause and landing him and his family with costly medical bills.

His fellow fraternity brothers started a GoFundMe that took off on social media, raising over twenty thousand dollars in just a matter of days. Sigma Phi Epsilon members say it shows some of the good that Greek Life can do.

“This community definitely can come together when they need to…I think every single chapter reposted it at the University of Maine, and that’s really special to see,” said Jack Blais, Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter president.

“It was great to see like the whole community coming behind us, like it was people that I didn’t even know that were posting stuff on Instagram,” shared Jackson Varley, Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter Vice President.

Gobeil is in his last week of chemotherapy, and his fraternity brothers say is prognosis is good.
