FLORENCE, Ala. — The Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of North Alabama donated $15,000 to Safeplace, Inc., a domestic violence awareness program that supports six counties in northwest Alabama.
The fundraising efforts are from the annual Derby Days activities. Sororities on campus compete against each other to raise money for the Safeplace organization.
This year’s donation more than doubled last year’s contribution of $7,000.
Sigma Chi member Zachary Perkins said his fraternity’s philanthropic efforts to help Safeplace are born out of respect for the organization that provides shelter and support services for victims of domestic abuse.
“Safeplace exemplifies the need for a support structure to the people who need it most,” he said.
“The organization and its employees are an example of how a caring group of people can make a difference in others’ lives while showing utmost respect for anyone’s situation.”
