A 2019 graduate of Portland High School has become a student leader at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU).
Jalen Everett is president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) there, which represents the historically black fraternities and sororities on campus.
When he ran for president, he made a promise to get a physical representation on campus recognizing the fraternities and sororities in NPHC and that he would work to get an advisor.
At the beginning of his second term, the college appointed an advisor for NPHC, and on Feb. 17, MTSU placed bronze plaques at the Student Union Commons recognizing the institution’s 50-year relationship. Both his promises had been accomplished.
A large group gathered for the ceremony at the Student Union as the 10 plaques were installed. These nine sororities and fraternities represent those “Divine 9” nationally recognized historically black fraternities and sororities.
A tenth plaque had the names of the “Divine 9”. Representatives from each of the sororities and fraternities were present for the ceremony, along with President Sydney A. McPhee who praised NPHC for their contributions to campus life over the ages. Everett was there as president of NPHC and spoke at the ceremony.
