UTM Murray State game ball

JOHN WRIGHT / Ledger & Times Oct 19, 2022

The game ball for the recent UT Martin-Murray State took a rather unusual path as it transported via the soles of the feet of members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities at both Murray State and UTM. On the day of the game, which was played at Roy Stewart Stadium in iMurray, UTM Pikes started the more-than-40-mile journey by running the ball from Martin, Tennessee 20 miles to the Kentucky state line, where Murray State Pikes handled the final 25 miles with Murray State University Police Chief Jeff Gentry and his officers providing security after the ball entered Kentucky. The ball was not the official game ball, per NCAA rules. However, this recreated a similar mission between the two schools that occurred in 1981. Murray State Pikes used the event as a fundraiser to support the Men in Pink drive for the new Regional Cancer Center at Murray-Calloway County Hospital.
