On most college campuses, the use of alcohol at parties is common. Unfortunately, with that comes the possibility of dangerous substances being slipped into drinks. Making matters worse, a drink being spiked can often result in the victim being sexually assaulted. Especially prevalent in college settings, one University of Cincinnati (UC) student, Cole Williams, a fourth-year nursing student, is pursuing ways to prevent drink spiking on UC’s campus.

Williams is the president of the fraternity Pi Lambda Phi at UC and wanted to find an item that could make drinks more difficult to spike, specifically at the fraternity’s trivia nights, and therefore help to reduce the rates of sexual assault.

Through his research, Williams came across the brand My Cup Condom, a company that sells a condom-like slip to cover people’s drinks. The items were made to prevent unwanted substances from slipping into anyone’s drinks. He originally purchased 75 My Cup Condoms for the trivia night and noticed a high demand for more.

“I was inspired by the UC Student Wellness Center to do this for students,” Williams said. “Greek life repeatedly is known for having alcohol, so I thought this was a good idea.”
