UNC Charlotte’s Mu Tau chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted a session on Sept. 19 to educate young men both in and outside of the chapter about sexual education.

Jeffery Carter, a third-year student and president of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity chapter on Charlotte’s campus, coordinated this event.

“This event covered a lot of general sexual knowledge in reference to sexual health, sexual behavior, as well as interpersonal violence,” said Carter. “So engaging in more intimate relationships with other people and the proper strategies and resources available to young students, but specifically young male students.”

The session was a presentation about the role of males in relationships and how to protect oneself and their partner.

There are many on-campus and online resources regarding sexual education for those who were unable to attend the event.

“A good place to go is our Title IX office, and they can talk to you a little bit more about the misconduct and how things are handled in that regard,” said Carter. “People can also talk to CAPS for any psychological help.”

This event is part of a more extensive program that the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has hosted nationwide since 1980. The organization curates this event for middle and high school students.

Carter had the idea to restructure the event for college students due to the unique struggles and lack of education college students face regarding sexually transmitted infections and chances of unwanted pregnancy.

“We wanted to host it here specifically just because of the reach that we would have within the diverse UNC Charlotte community,” said Carter. “We wanted to make sure that we educated the student body just because there aren’t enough spaces where students are getting educated. And so we want to do our part to make sure that we’re being advocates for these topics.”
