Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity hosts Project Alpha event to offer young men guidance

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The Eta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated hosted their annual ‘Project Alpha’ event, Saturday, Feb. 10.

At this event, members connect with local young men and offer them guidance. The topic on Saturday was ‘Teen Pregnancy From the Male Perspective.’ The chapter partnered with the March of Dimes to bring this information to the community, hoping to prevent Teen Pregnancy.

Davison Virgil is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, and while he says this is the major topic of the evening, it’s not the only one covered.

“We talk about things such as relationships, we talk about how to dress for success,” Virgil said. “We talk about preventing STD and things of that nature. And Sometimes we talk about financial literacy.”

The young men also heard from community leaders, like law enforcement officers. Amir Jiles attended the session, sharing all he learned from today’s speakers.

”They’re telling us and updating us on life,” Jiles said. “It makes me feel great that they’re even out here doing this for us, and taking time out of their day. They came out here at 9 o’clock, and mind you, I don’t even wake up at 9 o’clock, so that’s good for me.”
