Divine Mesumbe Greek life representatives from three universities came to AACC to teach students about fraternities and sororities.

Greek life representatives from Howard University, Bowie State University and the University of Maryland, College Park, came to the college at an event on Wednesday to teach AACC students how to join a fraternity or sorority at a four-year university.

Marcus Wright, the AACC director of transfer, articulation and career alignment, organized the Greek Life and Transfer event.

“Being a part of a Greek organization … has been very important regarding networking and being able to connect with other[s],” Wright, an Omega Psi Phi member, said.

The three speakers gave students advice on joining a Greek society as a transfer student.

Wright said because AACC has no fraternities or sororities, students may not know or think about them.

“I wanted to … have students start to think about those things,” Wright said.

According to Wright, AACC students may struggle to figure out how to join a Greek society at a four-year university.

“There’s certain requirements that are needed … [and there’s] different requirements for different organizations,” Wright said. “It looks different for a transfer student. … Do they know how to get into these organizations [as a community college student]?”

Prerequisites to joining a fraternity, such as GPA requirements, financial commitments and experiences will vary from university to university, said Wright, who advised students to reach out to the coordinators of Greek life at their new schools if they want to learn more about it.

Third-year environmental science student Rabiyatou Bah said the event was “very informative” but lacked female panelists.

Ash Hampton, a second-year transfer studies student, agreed.

“They could have brought more women into the mix of things,” Hampton said. “That was the only thing I was worried about.”
