FSU alum to perform one-man show on mental health, gun violence in Tallahassee

When Florida State University alumnus Micah Johnson looks back at his childhood, he remembers growing up near Orlando in a tough environment filled with shootings, stabbings, fights and brawls.

“I grew up in neighborhoods where youth were violent and would fight and would eventually start carrying guns,” Johnson, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, told the Tallahassee Democrat. “The first time I had a gun pulled on me, I was 12 years old.”

His experience is what gave him the drive to write and produce an exclusive one-man show that he will perform in to promote mental health and shines light on gun violence while also celebrating the 45th anniversary of FSU’s “Mighty” Mu Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

The world premiere sneak peek of the soon-to-be television special “On Sight” – a solo play that uses comedy, drama, science and street culture to discuss mental health and youth gun violence – will be held at approximately 7:14 p.m. Thursday at the Challenger Learning Center. The show is free and open to the public.
