City honors TAMIU fraternity Phi Iota Alpha for community service

Laredo City Council recently recognized the Phi Iota Alpha fraternity of Texas A&M International University for completing more than 2,100 community service hours during the 2024-25 academic year.

District V Councilmember Ruben Gutierrez introduced the recognition under a supplemental agenda item, which Council approved by voice vote. The proclamation was also co-sponsored by District I Councilmember Gilbert Gonzalez.

City leaders commended the fraternity’s dedication to civic engagement and community impact, noting the involvement of nearly 30 chapter members. The recognition gave special mention to members Rodolfo Rendon, Dylan Bryant and Gadlo Ochoa for their contributions.

“You make us think that there is a future for Laredo … 2,100 hours is extremely commendable,” Gutierrez said.

The chapter thanked city leaders for the recognition, adding that the group recently received a university gold-level award for surpassing 1,000 hours of volunteer service. Despite being active at TAMIU for only two years, the fraternity has consistently reached that milestone.

Rendon also said members attended the meeting in support of broader community advocacy efforts discussed earlier that evening and pledged to continue working toward “the right decisions for the community.”
