CHESTERFIELD — The Hoops 4 Hope basketball tournament will take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the gymnasium at the Children’s Home of Virginia Baptists.

The entry fee to participate in the tournament or attend is 10 canned goods per person. All donations will be given to The Hope Center food pantry at Downtown Churches United in Petersburg.

The purpose of the tournament is to provide continuous support to the food pantry to ease hunger and financial stress for those in need. This inaugural event will include a contest, DJ and prizes.

The Hoops 4 Hope basketball tournament was established as a Guide Right Community Service Initiative for the young men of the Petersburg Kappa Youth Leadership and Development League “Kappa League.”

“We decided to do the tournament as part of MLK weekend to honor the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” Scott Johnson, Guide Right Chairman for Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. said. “It gives our young men an opportunity to come together, give back to the community, and have fun at the same time.”

Last year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the “Kappa League” donated $5,621.50 as well as 400 pounds of canned goods to The Hope Center.
