Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the City of Aurora, the Northern Illinois Food Bank and members of the Aurora Divine 9 Alliance, a thousand families are going into the holiday weekend with plenty to eat.
With their unwavering dedication and selflessness, nearly 150 Black fraternity and sorority members, also known as the Divine 9, volunteered at the fourth annual Juneteenth Food Distribution in Aurora to give food to 1,000 families in honor of Juneteenth and Father’s Day Weekend.
With cars lining up as early as 3:30 a.m., the gates opened at 9 a.m., and already 1,000 vehicles were waiting in the queue.
Families received packages of chicken, beans, cheese, fruits, and vegetables, which were placed in their trunks or back seats in a convenient drive-through format.
The Aurora Divine 9 Alliance is comprised of members of the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, which all make priority service a priority.
The event was the second in a series of weeklong events the city of Aurora is hosting for the Juneteenth holiday.
