Western Michigan University Fraternity and Sorority Life hosted a new student carnival on Aug. 27 to introduce incoming students to Greek Life.
The carnival was one of many events held during 2024 Fall Welcome, a week dedicated to providing new students the opportunity to get acclimated and involved in campus life.
The Fraternity and Sorority Life community at WMU is made up of over 1000 students and includes a total of 34 chapters across five councils.
Alongside booths for students to learn more about each individual chapter at WMU, the event also hosted live music, activities, games and free concessions.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. member Charisma Newell encourages those interested in learning more about Greek Life to find the chapter that’s best suited for them.
“Reach out, go to every event possible, and then you’ll find where you fit at,” Newell said. “You’ll find the people where you fit best.”
The dates for this year’s formal recruitment are Sept. 23-28. According to the WMU Fraternity and Sorority Life website, participating in the recruitment process is the best way to get to know the chapters on campus and maximize chances of receiving a bid.
Fall Welcome Ambassador Elisha Ewing spoke on the importance of Fall Welcome events such as the Greek Life carnival for new students.
“Greek life is a huge part of a lot of college students’ experiences,” Ewing said. “I think it’s really cool to have all of our Greek organizations all in one place for students to see and check out, so that they can get to know each one individually.”
