Western Michigan University fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha hosted a campout April 1 to raise money to support the organization Communities In Schools.
Communities In Schools is an organization dedicated to helping kids stay in school providing them with various levels of support.
“They help kids that are going through rough patches in their life stay in school, help them get family therapy, help with school lunch, those kinds of things,” said Josh Sprague, a vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha. “It’s really great to be out here seeing a lot of people come in and out, having fun and helping the kids out.”
The campout featured the members of Pi Kappa Alpha taking part in various activities as donation incentives. They also faced “punishments” if they reached certain incentives, such as having to give up something or having to get a buzz cut.
“Essentially the more you donate the more we lose, but it’s worth all of this to help Communities In Schools.” said Connor Frampton, philanthropy chair of Pi Kappa Alpha.
Pi Kappa Alpha’s hope is that WMU students will donate to give kids support.
“I think everyone in their lives struggles with something,” Sprague said. “And they all need help, whether that’s from their parents or from their friends or from someone who ran into them on the street. And, you know, that’s kind of what I hope we get out of this.”
Sprague continued: “You know, there’s kids in our neighborhoods, kids across the country, kids everywhere, that are struggling. They don’t have that kind of support that they need. And that’s what I want to bring out, I just want to bring that support and help them out so that they can become the best people that they can possibly be.”
