New Year, New Rush: Greek Recruitment

Abby Powers Sep 12, 2024

The Greek life recruitment season has already begun on Eastern Kentucky University’s (EKU) campus, marking a time of excitement and new opportunities for students interested in joining Greek life.

This recruitment season offers fresh possibilities for prospective new members to build connections and find a comfortable place on campus. Fraternities and sororities have gathered around campus to attract potential new members (PNM) into their organizations, showcasing what makes each chapter unique.

These events are held to introduce PNMs to the different organizations and help them learn about the values and activities of each chapter.

Since 1967, Greek life has had a rich history on campus, and this year is no exception. Greek life at EKU began with the establishment of fraternities followed by the introduction of sororities shortly after. These organizations were established to provide students with opportunities for connections and support. After 56 years, the Greek community still plays a vital role in campus life, with 11 sororities and 22 fraternities among different overarching councils.

Events have already started on campus, including open houses and socials at respective sororities and fraternities, as well as events hosted by EKU Greek life. These events are held to introduce possible new members to the different organizations.

Many students have already started searching for what Greek organization fits them best.

Ryan Jerome once asked himself the same question. Jerome is a sophomore from Brownstown, KY, majoring in construction management. Now a second-year active member in Sigma Pi, he feels as if made the perfect choice.

“It’s worth it…It’s a brotherhood,” said Jerome.“You can always count on them. If you ever need anything years down the road, after you’ve graduated, they’ll be there to help you.”

Greek life provides a network of support in an organization that shares similar ideas and values. Within fraternities and sororities, students can navigate through challenges and foster a sense of belonging.

Greek life can also encourage students to build a social network that extends beyond the fraternity or sorority. Along with social benefits, Greek life provides academic support that can motivate students to maintain good academic standing and achieve their academic goals. Greek organizations at EKU offer scholarships to their members, providing financial support to further students’ education. Greek organizations foster a culture for academic excellence to help students balance their social lives with their studies; encouraging the student to better themselves.

Jerome shared, “It (being in a fraternity) helped me mature a lot…my fraternity pushes you to be…your best self,” Jerome said.

Being a member of Greek life offered a blend of perks and growth opportunities for both individuals and the community. Greek organizations at EKU also contribute to the broader community. Using various philanthropic events, fundraising initiatives, and volunteer work, fraternities and sororities play a pivotal role in making a positive impact on the community.

Last year, Alpha Gamma Delta hosted one of their fundraising events, Alpha Gam Slam and raised $5,000 to fight hunger in support of their Philanthropy Partners, Feeding America and Meals on Wheels.

A Pi Kappa Alpha philanthropy event with Kham’s Klub raised over $3,000 towards supporting and empowering children with cancer.

Jerome discussed Sigma Pi and one of their philanthropy partners, Tree of Hope. Sigma Pi uses its philanthropy to collect donations of toys for families in need during the holiday season.

Jerome highlights the multiple benefits that come with joining Greek life.

“It helped me get out into the world and meet new people,” said Jerome. “And I feel like it could be helpful to you as well.”
