Tyler Jones ’11 has always striven to push himself to be the best student possible. With this fire, college was always the natural next step for him.
However, the transition to college life was not without its challenges. Jones struggled to manage his time and life structure at UNCW, a common experience for many first-generation students. It was during this time that he learned the importance of community. Over time, Jones participated in many organizations, becoming the vice president of the Association for Campus Entertainment and a founder of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at UNCW.
“My involvement in these organizations and activities played an integral part in conquering those initial obstacles of structure and time management,” Jones said. “It forced me to find and maintain a healthy balance between school, work and play, which has been invaluable since graduating. My involvement also introduced me to people I wouldn’t have met otherwise and continue to be some of my best friends to this day.”
Now, Jones works in finance at Universal Pictures, specializing in tax incentives for film productions. The 2011 alumnus continues to grow and become the best he can be. Jones’ desire to nurture his writing and creative side has led him to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Writing and Literature at Bennington College in Vermont as he continues to work at Universal Pictures.
Jones said the biggest advice he could give to fellow Seahawks is “to embrace uncertainty and know that it’s okay to feel like you don’t have it all figured out.”
“It can be overwhelming, but there are countless resources at your disposal and people who want to see you succeed,” he said. “Lastly, get involved early with any organizations and activities you find interesting. It’s a guaranteed way to fast-track establishing a network of friends and support.”
Jones credits his family as a source of support and encouragement that has heavily contributed to what his life is today. He uses his communication studies degree from UNCW as fuel for continuing onward and takes pride in his achievements.
“Getting my undergraduate degree—and the experience as a whole—remains one of my proudest accomplishments,” Jones said. “It’s a source of pride not just for me but for my family, who supported me and believed in the value of education. It serves as proof that, no matter how foreign the situation, I have all the tools I need to adapt, grow and excel.”
