A Morehouse release Tuesday morning announced Dr. F. DuBois Bowman will take over for Dr. David A. Thomas in June.

ATLANTA — Morehouse College on Tuesday morning announced its next president as Dr. F Dubois Bowman, a 1992 Morehouse grad described by the school as a “renowned public health leader and biostatistician.”

Dr. Bowman is currently the dean of the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

“Returning to Morehouse as its 13th president is the honor of a lifetime,” said Dr. Bowman. “This institution shaped who I am—instilling a commitment to excellence, justice, and impact. I am excited to partner with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters to build on our legacy and write the next chapter of Morehouse’s transformative story.”

The announcement came after current Morehouse President Dr. David Thomas said he is preparing to step down this June, bringing to a close a transformative and often challenging seven-year tenure at the helm of the historic all-male historically Black college.

The 68-year-old leader says it’s time for a generational shift at the college.

“I think it’s time for the baby boomers to leave this stage,” Dr. Thomas told 11Alive’s Jonathan Martin ahead of the announcement of Bowman as his successor. “The generation behind us has new ideas, new ways of engaging.”

Morehouse described Dr. Bowman as a “leading expert in the statistical analysis of complex data sets” and said his research has “transformed understanding of neurological and mental health disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia.”

“His work has shaped more personalized therapeutic approaches and has explored how environmental factors affect brain function in youth,” a release added.

Morehouse said Dr. Bowman is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. who has “remained closely connected to his alma mater as a two-time Morehouse parent and a dedicated mentor, facilitating a University of Michigan pipeline program for students from Morehouse and Spelman colleges.”
