PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — For the last 15 years, students at La Salle University have supported their younger peers through a 5k race.
The “Brother Gerry Molyneaux Sig Phive K” raises money for La Salle Academy, which supports underserved children in Kensington.
“15 years ago, myself and Brother Gerry Molyneaux got together and we saw a real opportunity …to offer something more than just what goes on inside the classroom,” said La Salle Alumni, John Schaefer.
“We have raised over a half a million dollars for La Salle Academy to date… This year we’re already eclipsing last year, which was $60,000, and we expect to do even more than that this year,” he continued.
La Salle’s “Sigma Phi Lambda” organizes the event with only members of the fraternity, and will also spend time with students at La Salle Academy independently of the race.
“It’s not just a monetary donation that they provide to the school. They also provide mentoring and are role models for our students,” said President of La Salle Academy, Maria Walker.
The academy provides a cost-effective alternative for children in Philadelphia to receive a Catholic education.
