BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Western’s campus collegiate organization Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. held their annual sleep out for the homeless event.

“Sleep out for the homeless” is a national initiative by the fraternity to raise awareness for those who struggle with day to day life on the street. Students who participated in the event camped out on south lawn from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

WKU student and chapter president Dashaun Van Cleave said in his interview with News 40 “… we’re privileged enough to have dorms, apartments , houses wherever we stay, and if we’re in the position to help someone in need, always do it. And that’s something we pride ourselves off of is service.”

This year, WKU’s Sigmas added on to their event, taking in water donations for the crisis in Jackson, Mississippi.

News 40 was also able to talk to Ashley Ranger another student and member of Alpha Xi Delta who said she had grown up around Bowling Green and “seen many people experiencing homelessness out on the street and how it’s been a growing problem in bowling green.”

According to non-profit organization Hotel Inc., the homeless population in bowling green is estimated to be around 200.
