Executive leaders from the Interfraternity Council gather in Tiger Park during Rush in Fall 2022.

Clemson University’s Interfraternity Council (IFC) has been named one of six recipients of the 2023 Laurel Wreath Award, presented annually by the North American Interfraternity Conference to individuals or groups in recognition of unique programs, community outreach and influence within the fraternal world.

IFC earned acclaim for its peer-led new member education process. Over the course of eight weeks, new members participate in four educational sessions on topics ranging from rights and responsibilities to well-being and personal accountability. Sessions were led by current IFC community members from different chapters who serve in mentorship roles. The series concluded with a keynote from Archie Messersmith-Bunting, an international speaker and mental health educator.

New member education aims to engage newly affiliated students from each of IFC’s 23 chapters. More than 700 new members joined IFC chapters in 2022-23.

“The Laurel Wreath Award is a prestigious honor, and I am proud of our IFC for being recognized for their educational initiatives and a positive influence on the men at Clemson,” said Gary Wiser, assistant dean of students and director of Fraternity and Sorority Life. “The IFC has emphasized making smart choices, prioritizing mental health and creating a positive fraternity experience through its new member education series.”
