[Sigma Chi alumnus,] Gerard van Belle ’90 was appointed the new Director of Science at Lowell Observatory. Van Belle has been an astronomer at the observatory since 2011 and served as the interim Director of Science. In 2026, Van Belle will join Whitman alumni on an 11-day Arctic adventure to witness a rare total solar eclipse from Greenland’s Scoresby Sound fjord system.
